Émeraude (S-604)

While operating submerged in the Mediterranean, a serious steam leak developed in the non-radioactive secondary steam loop in the reactor room. The Commanding Officer, along with a number of senior members of Émeraude's crew were investigating the leak. Unfortunately, they were not wearing protective clothing and were killed instantly with a steam pipe burst.

10 men killed.
