While in port at Anchorage, Alaska, the engine room of the S-38 was flooded when a valve cover below the waterline was removed by a crewmember who was performing routine maintenance.
S-38 had to be towed to Mare Island Naval Shipyard, in Vallejo, CA. Repairs required over eight months of work. S-38 finally returned to service in April, 1924.
