While recharging batteries in the San Pedro, CA harbor, S-37 was rocked by an explosion in the After Battery compartment. Two men were killed in the initial explosion, while another died of his injuries. Two more men were rescued from the smoke- and fume-filled compartment.
Once it was determined that no one remained alive in After Battery, the compartment was sealed to cut off the supply of oxygen to the fire. However, early the next morning, the pressure build up in After Batter was so great that the main hatch was forced open. The compartment was re-sealed, but when it was opened at 1030, the fire again flared up, forcing the crew to close the hatches again. Finally, at 1130, After Battery had cooled enough to allow the crew to enter safely. After ventilating After Battery, temporary repairs were begun. The repairs were completed on 20 October, and S-37 headed to Mare Island for permanent repairs, which were completed in mid-December.
Three men killed. Two additional men seriously injured. 33 survivors.
