While on patrol near the Panama Canal, a fire broke out in the after battery room. The fire spread to the engine room and then to the after torpedo room, killing 25 enlisted men before the it was extinguished.
Twenty five men lost, 31 survivors.
Temporary repairs took eight weeks before the Bass could make the trip to Philadelphia for a complete overhaul. She would stay in drydock until December 1943 before returning to limited service. Bass would never again make a war patrol.
