Lost power and broached the surface uncontrollably during an exercise. Stickleback was hit broadside, just forward of the conning tower by U.S.S. Silverstein (DE-534). The crew abandoned ship. Stickleback sank during the salvage attempt.
No men lost. All 82 crew members escaped.
