USS Bonefish (SS-582)

Date of Loss: 24 April, 1988

Returned to Service: No

While operating submerged during an exercise, a battery cable short-circuited, starting a fire in one of the battery compartments. The fire spread rapidly, sending thick smoke throughout Bonefish. The fire was so severe that, despite their best efforts, the crew was forced to bring Bonefish to the surface and abandon ship. Bonefish was towed back into port, but was subsequently decommissioned due to the extent of the damage.

Three men lost, 89 survivors.
