U.S.S. Grayback (SSG-574)

Date of Accident 27 August, 1963

Returned to Service: Yes

While running just under the surface and snorkeling to recharge batteries, Grayback was buffeted by particularly strong seas. The buffeting caused the After Main Battery circuit breaker to short out, starting a fire in the After Battery Berthing compartment. One seaman, who failed to evacuate the compartment, was overcome by smoke and fumes.

Main propulsion was lost for a short time, but was restored, and the Grayback was able return to Pearl Harbor under her own power. Repairs took two weeks.

One man lost.
