Scorpion sank at 1844 GMT on 22 May, 1968 while 400 miles southwest of the Azores Islands. Scorpion's wreckage was discovered in some 10,000 feet of water.
The formal report on the loss of Scorpion was made public in 1998. A very detailed article concerning her loss was published in the July, 1998 issue of Proceedings of the United States Naval Institute.
Ninety nine men lost, no survivors.

Scorpion had not be fitted with the "Subsafe" modifications that were developed following the loss of USS Thresher (SSN-593)
